Conflict Resolution Program

The Challenge

Since the pandemic schools across the country have seen an increase in confrontational behaviors and stress among students, at all grade levels. Social skills like cooperation, empathy, and self-control are being overshadowed by more aggressive behaviors. Thus, we have partnered with CCSD Charleston County School District to implement a “Conflict Resolution” program. We had our first rollout in February 2022, and we’re already seeing positive outcomes.

Details about the program

Learning how to handle disagreements and conflict is a critical part of social-emotional learning. Social skills like cooperation, empathy, and self-control are integral to emotional development and conflict resolution. The goal of these classes is to help the students recognize the causes of conflict, and how to use different methods to resolve disagreements constructively. This is an evidence-based program (which has a 98% completion rate of students enrolled). In addition, documented reports from school staff showed an increase in academic scores as well as a decrease in behavioral infractions. This program is adaptable at any grade level to include adults.

Through this program, we give students the tools and a support system that provides alternatives to negative behaviors. This intervention aids in minimizing the anxiety caused by the student’s inability to cope with life’s ever-changing challenges. Our goal is to bring support to the school systems to help aid teachers, and the school system in meeting the growing, educational, emotional, and social needs of the students. We want to see this program grow to assist other students at other schools so schools can remain a place of learning, development, and growth.

How it Works

Program Entry

- This 12 weeks program is based around the Social & Emotional Learning model. The program requires referrals to come from teachers or counselors; for students who are repeat offenders of behavioral infractions.

- The school sends out permission slips to each parent informing the parent, of the intent to enroll their student.

- An outline of the program is attached to the permission slip.

- When the permission slip is returned, each referral teacher will fill out a profile sheet for each student targeting the areas of improvement.

- The instructor and school staff will determine the schedule for the 12-week program duration.

- The Conflict Resolution Workshop is planned during the program for everyone to come
together; the students, parents, and school staff members for SEL collaboration.

- Program Director (PD) every 30 days, will schedule meetings with the referring teachers to discuss updates pertaining to behavior and academic progress.

- The PD sends a packet home with each student to inform parents of progress and challenges. Students are rewarded for progression regardless of measurements.

- The PD coordinates with the school staff to discuss the progress and challenges of the class as a whole.

- Conflict Resolution Programs a full meal at each class segment.

- At the end of the program, a graduation is held for all students who complete the program.

- To measure the program's success, a survey is given to the schools and students for feedback.

- Students are given an assessment test at the beginning and end of the program to measure progress.
